2009-10 PROGRAM INFORMATION
WHAT?
Our 2009-10 Winter Training Academy consists of hour-long skill clinics that teach players the fundamentals and advanced techniques of college and pro-style baseball and softball hitting, pitching & catching, fielding and sport-specific conditioning & fitness.
Our 2009-10 Winter Training Academy will have sport-specific programs for both baseball and softball players. That is, baseball and softball programs will be conducted independent of each other: Baseball players will receive baseball-specific instruction, and softball players will receive softball-specific instruction.
Want evidence of our baseball/softball program distinction? Each program will have its own:
- Coaches - see our present coaches' biographies on the "Meet Our Staff" links on the left
- Clinic offerings - ex. baseball hitting vs. softball hitting
- Instructional content - Focuses on specific strategies for the nuances of each sport
Our clinics are organized into 4 main categories.
All Around the Diamond: Ages 6-8
Players will learn the FUNdamentals of the game, including hitting, fielding, basic throwing and pitching in a safe, fun and child-centered environment.
Little League Prep (Hitting or Pitching): Ages 9-12
Starting with this age group, players select the specific skill they would like to learn and practice. The basics, along with advanced instruction, is provided in an effort to address the strengths and needs of each player.
High School Prep (Hitting or Pitching): Ages 13-15
This clinic is geared towards the player who is competing at the middle grade and early high school levels. Specific attention is given to teaching players how to mazimize their bodies' output while performing a specific skill on a 90' diamond.
College Prep LIVE: Ages 15-18
Our College Prep LIVE Clinic (ages 15-18) is the first of its kind made available to the high school public! Our College Prep LIVE Clinicwill involve "LIVE" hitting, pitching and catching. In a standard, pro-sized batting cage of 70', a pitcher will pitch to batters, with a catcher, as if in a REAL-LIVE game. Emphasis for all positions will be on replicating game speed and function in a professionally-supervised environment, while also developing skill/technique and tactical aspects (ex. pitch selection, approach to the opposition, discussing of tendencies, etc.) of the game:
Hitters will receive multiple at-bats (approx. 4-6 at-bats each hour) and receive regular feedback with respect to mechanics, pitch selection and physical/mental approach (see below).
Pitchers will throw a pre-determined number of pitches from the "stretch" and windup (ex. 30) in different game situations (ex. type of hitter pitching to, runners on base, eary in game/late in game, etc.).
Catchers will practice the necessary defensive skills as receiving, blocking, throwing and game/pitch-calling.
All positions will receive training and feedback, both during and after performance, in an effort to provide highly supervised and quality instruction.
HOW?
All clinics in our 2009-10 Winter Training Academy will have a maximum capacity of 12 players (except our College Prep LIVE Clinic, which will have a maximum of 8 players) and will have a player:coach ratio of approximately 4:1 in order to maintain an optimally safe, instructional and fun environment. Each week clinics will engage players in activity/drill stations, modified games to apply players' skills as well as video analysis.
All clinics are considered to be cumulative "skill-builders". By the end of each session players will have enhanced their knowledge and skills based on their participation in the clinics.
